Hair Loss Myths, How to Really Treat Hair Loss

At first, you ignore it. That unusual amount of hair on my comb can’t possibly belong to me. Or, that’s just the sun shining on my head; it can’t possibly be a bald spot. Even better; I’m too young to lose my hair! Don’t worry, you local Austin dermatology office has you covered.

Then reality sets in and now you chastise yourself for not paying attention to those so-called myths about hair loss. Were they really myths or are they true?

1. Too much shampooing makes your hair fall out. False. Hair follicles naturally
fall out and are naturally replaced.
2. Too much sun makes your hair fall out. Somewhat true. Too much ultraviolet
radiation can weaken hair fibers and make them more likely to break.
3. Stress causes hair loss. True and false. Emotional and physical stress can
speed up balding, but the hair will grow back unless there is another reason
for the loss.
4. Pull out one gray hair and two more will grow back. False. Pulling out hair
won’t make more grow back.
5. Hats cause baldness. False … period.

The truth is that two out of three men and lots of women too will begin to grow bald by the age of 60. Male pattern baldness is the common name for the receding front hairline. There are also other causes such as genetics and illness. What can you do about baldness, except grin and bear it? Depending upon how you feel about a bald head or a deeply receding hairline, there are these possibilities.

1. Medications approved by the FDA include Minoxidil (Rogaine), an over-the-
counter liquid/foam that is rubbed into the scalp, and Finastgeride
(Propecia), a prescription drug taken daily in pill form. These drugs may grow
new hair or slow the loss of hair or both.
2. Hair transplants. Plugs of skin are removed from the back and sides of the
scalp and implanted in the bald areas. Several transplants may be necessary.
Head surgery is expensive and somewhat painful. The risks are scarring and
skin infections.
3. High quality and natural-looking wigs and hairpieces are available for both
men and women to cover bald spots or the entire scalp.
